Troxus Lynx E-Bike Review, 2024

Intro

Troxus is an e-bike brand that is relatively new to us. Like other direct-to-consumer brands, their focus is on the value-end of the market, with e-bikes starting a bit more than $1000 up to a bit more than $2000. The Lynx is one of two models featuring a step-through frame, as well as one of two models they offer with 20-in. wheels. In our Troxus Lynx review we will look at this e-bike’s strengths and how it differs from other similar e-bikes.

What sets the Troxus Lynx apart from many e-bikes with 20-in. wheels and a step-thru frame is its powerful motor and ginormous battery. Powering its 750W brushless, geared hub motor is a 960Wh Samsung battery, which is big enough to give most riders at least 50 mi. of range in PAS 1, making it well-suited to exploring back roads and wild places, without fear of finding themselves stranded or pedaling home with no help.

The Troxus Lynx features a high-rise handlebar—kind of like those found on BMX bikes—that make it a bit more flexible in comfortably fitting riders of different heights than with some of the e-bikes we see.

This is a versatile e-bike that can handle some off-road riding, commuting and thanks to its rack, errand running as well.

Troxus Lynx Review: Comfort, Handling, and Ride Qualities

Thanks to 4-in.-wide tires, a suspension fork and a big saddle with shock-absorbing bumpers, the Troxus Lynx gives riders a very comfortable ride. Someone could hit a pothole and not get bucked out of the saddle with the Lynx. For anyone whose first concern is comfort, this is a terrific e-bike to consider.

Riders who want to be able to sit as upright as possible will like the high-rise handlebar that can be tilted back toward the rider, allowing them the potential to sit with a straight back.

E-bikes built with 20-in. wheels tend to be the most nimble models we encounter. The smaller wheels turn more easily and give riders the ability to thread through crowded bike paths and busy streets. E-bikes like this can be a little nervous feeling at higher speeds; as a result they tend to have a sweet spot in handling between 8 and 16 mph.

Troxus Lynx Review: Motor, Battery, and Drivetrain Performance

The Troxus Lynx features a 750W brushless, geared hub motor made by Bafang. It produces 80Nm of torque. That’s a powerful hub motor by any measure, but when combined with 20-in. wheels, as opposed to 26-in. wheels (or something even larger), that motor enjoys a little extra muscle flex because a smaller wheel is easier to accelerate. It’s harder to keep at speed, but the acceleration is more immediate, so taking off from a stop on this e-bike is especially zippy.
Thanks to the Bafang motor, the Lynx climbs very well.

This is a Class 3 e-bike with a top speed of 28 mph. That speed might be tough to reach, though. When wheel size is reduced, the size of the gear is effectively reduced as well. A 46 x 28 (front chainring x rear cog) low gear on an e-bike with 26-in. wheels is bigger than a 46 x 28 on an e-bike with 20-in. wheels. The Troxus Lynx has a high gear of 46 x 14, and when combined with 20-in. wheels the rider will need to pedal rather quickly to reach 28 mph. Not impossible by any means, but maybe not easy.

With a 960Wh Samsung battery, riders will enjoy the ability to ride for hours upon hours. This is one of the biggest batteries we see spec’d in e-bikes. Troxus estimates that riders could cover upward of 60 miles on a single charge. Even more impressive is that even in PAS 5, Troxus estimates that some riders might ride more than 50 miles on a single charge.

The Troxus Lynx features a Shimano Altus 7-speed drivetrain. As we mentioned previously, it may prove difficult to ride faster than 20 mph on this e-bike, but this is a quality drivetrain and it will perform well on hills. We see this drivetrain on a great many e-bikes and our criticism isn’t specific to the Troxus Lynx; it turns up again and again on e-bikes with this drivetrain and 20-in. wheels.

Troxus Lynx Review: Braking, Safety & Warranty

We are big boosters of hydraulic disc brakes, here at Best Electric Bikes. They have terrific power, modulate easily have give a terrific feel at the lever. However, not every e-bike needs them in order to offer terrific control. Just as smaller wheels are easier to accelerate, they are also easier to stop. The Troxus Lynx is equipped with Tektro mechanical disc brakes paired with 160mm rotors.

Personal preferences aside, the real question with any e-bike is whether or not the brakes provide enough power to stop in a reasonable distance as well as modulate well enough to allow a rider to scrub a bit of speed as they enter a turn. We do run across e-bikes that due to the particular combination of the e-bike’s weight and the choice of brake aren’t exactly hasty about stopping. With the Troxus Lynx that’s not a problem. The Tektros spec’d on this e-bike will do the job just fine.

There’s nothing about the Troxus Lynx that concerns us in terms of the rider’s safety. This is a well-made e-bike. The one detail about the Lynx that we would advise bigger riders to be mindful of is that this e-bike has a maximum rider weight limit of 275 lbs. That’s not as high as some e-bikes we review and for someone looking to get some exercise after spending some years not being very active, this e-bike may not be stout enough.

Troxus offers a 2-year warranty, which is a step up from the one year coverage we often see.

Troxus Lynx Review: Recommendation/Final Verdict

Having just reviewed the Troxus Explorer, we lamented that the frame on that e-bike was large enough to present an issue for many smaller riders. With the Troxus Lynx we have an alternative. Thanks in large part to the high-rise handlebar, but also due to the shorter seat tube, the Troxus Lynx is suited to smaller riders in a way that the Explorer is not.

Color displays grab attention and they certainly look good. Display size makes a bigger difference in actual readability, though. We love a large display like the one on the Troxus Lynx because the numbers are large enough to read, even when riding a bumpy dirt road. We also like that it’s big enough that riders can see more than one data point at a time. Having to scroll through functions to see both current speed and current battery charge is a pain.

The Lynx is equipped with what is a pretty standard complement of accessories: a rear rack, front and rear lights and front and rear fenders. This is an e-bike that is well-suited to light off-road duty and can also be used for commuting, errand-running or just zipping around town for fun.

Thanks to its 960Wh Samsung battery, this is an e-bike we would encourage anyone with range anxiety to look at. Sure, it’s possible to buy a second battery for some e-bikes in order to extend their range, but the battery is the single most expensive component of an e-bike and if someone can buy an e-bike with a battery big enough to suit their needs, well, that just makes more sense.
