November 21, 2023 By Michael Clark Leave a Comment

Summary Lectric XP Lite Electric Bike

Overall Rating:

4.9
Check Latest PriceLectric XP Lite Electric Bike

Pros

  • One of the most affordable e-bikes on the market
  • At 46 lbs., the XP Lite is relatively light and will be easier for many people to carry and put away.
  • As a Class 2 e-bike it has a very manageable top speed of 20 mph plus a thumb throttle to rescue tired legs
  • 374Wh battery offers up to 40 mi. range per charge according to the web site
  • Lectric offers a broad array of accessories like racks, baskets and panniers

Cons

  • With only one speed and a cadence sensor, that first pedal stroke requires a bit of effort
  • Is likely to struggle on steeper hills with some riders

Lectric Bikes XP Lite Review: Intro Of the many e-bike brands we review, one of the brands that most consistently impresses us is Lectric Bikes. They have consistently delivered quality e-bikes that don’t cost an arm and both legs. Lectric has introduced a new model, the XP Lite that takes their ultra-popular XP 2.0 and […]

Aventon Pace 500.3 Review 2024

November 20, 2023 By Michael Clark Leave a Comment

Overall Rating:

4.8
Check Latest Price

Pros

  • At just 52 lbs., this e-bike is lighter than most in its price range, making it easier to handle, as well as to store
  • 500W brushless, geared hub motor offers the power necessary to deliver riders to Class 3 speeds, cutting commute times
  • 614Wh battery provides excellent range; Aventon estimates 60 mi. per charge
  • 8-speed Shimano drivetrain offers a wider gear range, better shifter and one more gear than most competitive e-bikes
  • Thanks to a torque sensor the Pace 500.3’s hub motor is more responsive than those on e-bikes equipped with cadence sensors
  • Aventon’s smartphone app gives riders additional control over the motor’s operation, including the ability to unlock the motor for Class 3 speeds

Cons

  • Some shoppers will be disappointed that Aventon didn’t include fenders and a rear rack
  • A slightly wider tire would improve rider comfort and traction in turns and when braking

Intro The commuter e-bike is like the four-door sedan of the e-bike world. They come in many shapes and sizes and with a variety of different priorities. It’s fair to say that the commuter e-bike is no one particular thing. With the Aventon Pace 500.3 we have a relatively light e-bike that gives riders a […]

Aventon Level 2 ST Review 2024

November 20, 2023 By Michael Clark Leave a Comment

Overall Rating:

4.8
Check Latest Price

Pros

  • This is a ready-to-go all-season, all-weather commuter with everything a rider needs save panniers or a backpack.
  • Thanks to its 750W brushless, geared hub motor, this e-bike is quick to accelerate and if unlocked, can deliver its rider to Class 3 speeds
  • The Level.2 features a torque sensor to give riders more immediate acceleration as well as making the motor responsive to the rider’s pedaling
  • Comes in both a traditional frame and a step-thru frame and both frames come in two sizes which will cover a broad range of rider heights for better-than-usual fit
  • We don’t often see 8-speed drivetrains on e-bikes in this price range and appreciate the wide range of gears as well as the easy-to-use trigger shifter
  • Aventon’s smartphone app gives riders the ability to adjust the motor’s performance, track their rides using GPS and connect with other Aventon owners

Cons

  • We think most commuters would prefer a handlebar with more sweep so that they can sit more upright
  • Riders looking for maximum warp on the throttle might be disappointed with its speed

Intro When buying a commuter e-bike, there are a couple of different strategies for how to narrow the field. Of course, someone could choose to look for the kind of the hill, the best-made and equipped commuter on the market. Most of us don’t have money to burn, so we tend to either focus on […]

Mokwheel Asphalt Review, 2024

September 7, 2023 By Michael Clark Leave a Comment

Summary Mokwheel Asphalt Electric Bike

Overall Rating:

4.7
Check Latest PriceMokwheel Asphalt Electric Bike

Pros

  • Class 3 commuter capable of hitting 28 mph straight out of the box, no complicated unlocking necessary
  • 500W brushless, geared hub motor produces 65Nm of torque gives great performance while keeping weight down
  • 706Wh battery is estimated to offer riders up to 60 mi. of riding per charge
  • At 60 lbs., this is relatively light for a commuter e-bike
  • Acceleration is immediate and proportional to the rider’s effort thanks to a torque sensor
  • Comes in three different frame to better fit buyers

Cons

  • We’d love to see a wider-range cassette to give riders more help on the hills
  • The copy on their website is poorly enough written as to be confusing
Mokwheel Asphalt Review 2023

Intro Commuter e-bikes are to the e-bike world what four-door sedans are to the car world. Every company makes at least one and they serve with terrific versatility and are more economic than many other options. Mokwheel has made a name for themselves for their fat-tire e-bikes, so the Asphalt is a departure for them. […]

Ride1UP Rift Review, 2024

September 7, 2023 By Michael Clark Leave a Comment

Summary Ride1UP Rift Electric Bike

Overall Rating:

4.8
Check Latest PriceRide1UP Rift Electric Bike

Pros

  • Powerful 750W brushless, geared hub motor produces a very muscular 95Nm of torque for impressive off-road performance
  • 960Wh battery should take care of anyone’s range anxiety; Ride1UP estimates a range of up to 60 mi.
  • 4-piston hydraulic disc brakes paired with 180mm rotors give riders terrific control, and will allow anyone confidence on downhills
  • Rear rack is integrated into the frame, making it stronger than most, which is why it can carry up to 150 lbs.
  • Comes in both a traditional frame and a step-thru version to fit a range a riders
  • 120mm-travel air-spring fork gives riders a better ride than most of the suspension forks we see on e-bikes in this price range

Cons

  • We would prefer the PAS selector and the display be two separate units so that the display can be mounted at the stem; reading a display mounted near the brake lever while riding on bumpy ground can be very difficult
  • At 84.5 lbs., the Rift may be difficult for smaller riders to manage
Ride1UP Rift 2023

Intro Fat-tire e-bikes present an exciting opportunity for riders. While they can serve as comfy commuters and make for a fun way to get outside, they offer riders a chance to explore the backcountry and go places that would be hard to reach by any other method. The Ride1UP Rift is an affordable fat-tire e-bike […]

  • Thanks to a 750W hub motor that produces 90Nm of torque, the Scoria has terrific acceleration and great climbing power
  • With a 940Wh lithium-ion battery, the Scoria offers impressive range; riders may cover as many as 80 mi. on a single charge

  • Easy-to-read, center-mounted, color LED display for quick information
  • Hydraulic disc brakes with 180mm rotors offer terrific stopping power thanks to 20-in. wheels

Cons

  • At 79 lbs., the Scoria is on the heavy side and may be harder for smaller riders to handle
  • People at the edges of their sizing range (5 feet 0 to 6 feet 2), may struggle to be comfortable on this e-bike, especially smaller riders
Mokwheel Scoria 2023

Intro An e-bike is a great way to get stuff done. As errand-runners, they can be handy for their nimble handling, making them easy to get into and out of shopping centers and strip malls. They are easy to park and lock, and with a good rack or basket, they can carry everything from several […]

Juiced CrossCurrent X Review, 2024

September 7, 2023 By Michael Clark Leave a Comment

Summary Juiced CrossCurrent X Electric Bike

Overall Rating:

4.8
Check Latest PriceJuiced CrossCurrent X Electric Bike

Pros

  • 750W brushless, geared hub motor produces 80Nm of torque, giving this e-bike the power necessary to reach Class 3 top speeds, and stay there
  • 998Wh lithium-ion battery is estimated to give riders a range of 80+ mi., making it ideal for riders who want to undertake a longer commute in PAS 5
  • The motor is governed by a torque sensor for immediate acceleration and a more responsive application of power—when the rider goes harder, the motor goes harder
  • 9-speed Shimano Altus drivetrain gives more gears and a broader range of them than we see in most e-bikes in this price range
  • Comes with a ready-to-go package of accessories including fenders, lights, rear rack and kickstand

Cons

  • The display is rather small and mounted near the grip where it is hard to see while moving
  • We wish that the four different frames had differing top tube lengths to make the fit better for both smaller and taller riders
Juiced CrossCurrent 2023

Intro Commuter e-bikes are the mouse traps of the e-bike world. Everyone who makes them tries to outdo the other manufacturers with a collection of features to make theirs better than those from the competition. The Juiced CrossCurrent X enters the fray with a reasonable claim to be better than most. The challenge in making […]

Velotric T1 Review, 2024

September 7, 2023 By Michael Clark Leave a Comment

Summary Velotric T1 Electric Bike

Overall Rating:

4.8
Check Latest PriceVelotric T1 Electric Bike

Pros

  • Weighs just 36 lbs., making it an unusually light e-bike, which gives it superior maneuverability and ease of storage
  • 350W brushless, geared hub motor may seem underpowered but can provide plenty of muscle in a lightweight e-bike
  • Thanks to the T1’s low weight and torque sensor, the 353Wh battery is estimated to offer riders a range of up to 70 mi.
  • Tektro hydraulic disc brakes with 160mm rotors provide plenty of stopping power for this road-oriented e-bike
  • Offers terrific security features including GPS tracking, an anti-theft alarm and automatic lights

Cons

  • The two sizes are actually very close in size. We wish there was a greater difference in top tube length between the medium and large sizes.
  • Would prefer that our smartphone isn’t the only display.
Velotric T1 Review 2023

Intro Judging from the number of e-bikes that come equipped with 750W motors and weigh north of 70 lbs., someone new to e-bikes could be forgiven for thinking there’s only one way to make an e-bike that offers some get-up-and-go. The Velotric T1 is one of a growing number of bikes that pushes back against […]

Velotric T1 ST Review, 2024

September 7, 2023 By Michael Clark Leave a Comment

Summary Velotric T1 ST Electric Bike

Overall Rating:

4.6
Check Latest PriceVelotric T1 ST Electric Bike

Pros

  • This e-bike is a lightweight in a good way—it tips the scales at only 36 lbs., making it one of the lightest e-bikes on the market in this price range
  • The 350W motor and 353Wh battery help keep the weight down on this e-bike, increasing its agility
  • With a fully hidden battery and the motor hidden between the cassette and brake rotor, the T1 ST doesn’t even look like an e-bike
  • An 8-speed drivetrain and hydraulic disc brakes are decidedly premium features for an e-bike in this price range
  • Is equipped with a torque sensor to give better acceleration and more responsive input from the motor as the rider pedals

Cons

  • Must use smartphone for the display
  • While they offer the frame in a smaller size, they don’t offer a step-thru frame, which can be helpful to smaller riders
Velotric T1 ST Review, 2023

Intro E-bikes have a reputation for being heavy. There are two reasons for that. The first is range anxiety; no one wants to have to pedal home without the motor because they were out too long. The second is that people want a powerful motor that offers good acceleration and determined performance on hills. The […]

Tenways CGO600 Review, 2024

September 7, 2023 By Michael Clark Leave a Comment

Summary Tenways CGO600 Electric Bike

Overall Rating:

4.7
Check Latest PriceTenways CGO600 Electric Bike

Pros

  • At 33 lbs., this is one of the lightest e-bikes we have encountered
  • The presence of a torque sensor means that this single-speed e-bike is easy to get going and offers great acceleration
  • Hydraulic disc brakes matched with 160mm rotors give this e-bike terrific stopping power
  • Aggressive riders looking for a maneuverable e-bike that can take their energy and give them a spirited ride will enjoy this
  • Includes a front light, kickstand and bell

Cons

  • The two frame sizes are very similar and the smaller size (medium) can’t accommodate more diminutive riders
  • Anyone who needs reading glasses won’t be able to read anything on the display other than the biggest number
Tenway GCO600 2023

Intro How can a company improve an e-bike’s performance without increasing the power of the hub motor or the battery size? It’s an interesting question and Tenways’ approach isn’t unique, but is uncommon. The Tenways CGO600 features a 250W hub motor paired with a 252Wh battery. That would seem rather under-baked were it not for […]
